If you asked the college version of myself if I’d ever become a runner, I’d laugh at the thought. Now, I run four to five days a week, packing in five miles a day. Running is a huge part of my life — it grounds me, forces me to breathe fresh air, and ultimately keeps me in shape (all while giving me killer calf muscles). For these reasons, running is my main form of exercise, but I’d be naive not to recognize how harsh it can be on your body. I’ve experienced major leg pain from running with bad form, and I’ve also run into foot pain from shoes with not enough support. Thankfully, none of these factors are problems with the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 Running Sneakers ($160). The sneakers help my form, have great arch support, and have enough grip to keep me stable in wet conditions.

What I Like About the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 Running Sneakers

I’ve owned these sneakers for over a month, and it took me a couple of runs to fall in love with them. The shoes have a thick layer of cushioning that propels you forward and helps you run faster with a smooth stride, and their carbon plate helps with support. As a result, I was sore after the first few runs in these sneakers and was confused by my aches and pains (I run daily and usually am never sore) and almost wrote them off. Thankfully, I didn’t — the soreness was because I was running at a faster pace than what I’m used to. I’m now obsessed with these sneakers’ cushioning and wouldn’t think twice to go back to my old running shoes.

The Deviate Nitro 2’s also have a great grip. I run rain or shine, so when I noticed these shoes’ tacky traction on top of wet leaves, I knew they were a great find. Not to mention they’re breathable, fit true to size, and have additional padding around the heel and collar that locks your foot into place to provide top-notch support and protection. I’m getting a better workout thanks to these sneakers — what more could you ask for?

What’s Worth Noting About the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 Running Sneakers

I’ve read reviews on the previous Deviate Nitro 2’s, and while they received great ratings, customers’ biggest complaints were the lack of padding around the heel and collar. With the Nitro 2’s, they seemed to have fixed that issue, along with a few other small improvements, to make this shoe top-notch. My only complaint (if you even consider it one) is that the colorway I received in these sneakers doesn’t seem to be available on Puma’s website. This could have been a last-minute change since I was gifted a pair to test and try by the brand, but it’s worth noting if you’re interested in the color I personally own.

Who Are the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 Running Sneakers Best For?

The shoes are great for every type of runner and can be worn on long runs, short runs, and even tempo days. Their light design is versatile, and if you’re the type of person who enjoys a quick run to start their day, these shoes are stylish enough to be worn for more than just a workout, but everywhere you go.

Are the Puma Deviate NITRO 2 Running Sneakers Worth the Splurge?

If you’ve had it with running shoes that lack support and don’t provide enough traction, I’d say the Puma Deviate Nitro 2’s are worth the splurge. Their price isn’t completely out of line for a quality running shoe, but in comparison to the market, I’d say they could go for $30 less and be a fair deal. Nevertheless, these shoes are a great buy and will impress those who run on a regular basis.
