On Friday, Prince Harry made an appearance during a virtual ceremony for the Diana Award, which aims to honor young people between the ages of nine and 25 who are working to improve life for others. It was established in 1999 in Princess Diana’s memory, and Harry offered viewers a speech that touched on his mother’s legacy. The ceremony was held on what would have been her 61st birthday.

He began by saying that there hasn’t been a day since her death where he hasn’t “thought about the mark she left” on everyone around her.

“I see her legacy in all of you,” Harry explained.“I see her legacy in a Diana Award community that spans multiple generations. I see her legacy every time I meet with families, young people, and children from all corners of the world. And, I see my mum’s legacy when I look at my own children every day.”

He went on to say that Diana taught him to strive for a “better world,” and since having kids, he understands her even better. Harry shares two children with his wife Meghan Markle, 3-year-old Archie and 1-year-old Lilibet, who is named after her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

He continued, “Now, as a husband and a parent, my mother’s voice is even stronger in my life. All of you have helped keep her voice alive by showing the world how each small action counts, how kindness is still valued, and how our world can be better if we choose to make it so.”

At the end of his speech, he concluded, “I know the memory I hold of my mum will never fade, because I see her spirit in each of you. So, thank you for keeping her fire alive.”
